Request an estimateIs your Davenport attic ready for more insulation?
Attic insulation in Davenport is a layer of loose fill or fiberglass batts across your attic floor that slows the heat leaving your rooms. At D&K Davenport Insulation Company, we usually start by sealing the gaps between the attic and the house below.
Most people call us because a room upstairs is cold, the house feels drafty or the heating bill keeps climbing. Before anything goes up there, I want to know the attic is ready, because insulation over a roof leak or a wet spot just hides the problem. The price depends on the size of the attic, how much insulation is already up there, how many gaps need sealing and whether old material has to come out first. The schedule turns on the same things, plus anything that has to be fixed before we start. The estimate I write after looking at your attic gives you your own number.
How we do attic insulation
I start by looking at what's already up there and where it's thin or crushed, which is usually at the edges and around wiring and lights. Next we do the air sealing, closing the gaps around can lights, pipes, wires and the hatch. Insulation laid over a draft just has air moving through it, and sealing first also helps keep moisture out of the attic. We keep the eaves open so air from the soffit vents can still get in and keep the roof deck dry over the edges. Then we bring the whole floor up even, with the edges as deep as the middle. We insulate and seal the attic hatch too, because a bare hatch lets warm air straight out.
Most attic floors get topped up with blown-in insulation, loose fill blown through a hose that settles around joists and wiring where batts leave gaps. If the cold floors and drafts go past the attic, our home insulation work looks at the walls and floors too, so you're not fixing one room at a time.
Attic insulation permits and houses in Davenport
Permits here come from the city's Building Counter. The City of Davenport list of permit work names remodels, roofing and electrical, plumbing and heating work, but it doesn't name attic insulation. That list doesn't settle whether your job needs a permit, so the Building Counter is the place to ask. The city says building and specialty work generally goes to a licensed and bonded contractor, who takes out the permit for the owner. If your job needs a permit, we take care of it with the city and tell you about it up front. If you hold legal title to a single-family house and want to do the work yourself, the city lets you remodel without a contractor license, and you take out any permits yourself at the Davenport Public Works Center. Mechanical, electrical and plumbing work isn't covered by that exception, so old wiring in the attic is usually where owners stop and call someone.
A lot of the houses we get into here are older, and the attics usually look alike. The loose fill is packed down in the middle and thin at the eaves, batts are shoved aside around wiring and can lights, and a bathroom fan is blowing straight into the attic. We're based in Davenport and work in cities on both sides of the river, and we find the same attics on jobs in Bettendorf and Rock Island, plus plenty of cities that don't have their own page here.
Why call us for attic insulation
I write your estimate in person
I come out to your house, go up into the attic and write the estimate myself. My crew does the work, and I check the finished attic with you, so the person who quoted the job is the one who checks it.
Learned on attics around Davenport
I learned this trade crawling through attics on my dad's crew around Davenport, and I started this business in 2021 to run jobs the way he taught me. That means the gaps get sealed before anything new goes down on top.
Licensed and insured for attic work
We're licensed and insured. People will be walking your ceiling joists and working around your wiring, and you should know they're covered.
Told straight, even without a sale
If your roof leaks or the attic isn't the real problem, I'll tell you, even if that means there's no job for us. When there is a job, the crew cleans up after itself, so the only thing you notice afterward is that the drafts are gone.

Frequently asked questions
How much does attic insulation cost in Davenport?
Attic insulation across the US usually costs about $1,700 to $2,500 per job, and that's the national going rate, not our price. Your own figure comes from the estimate, after I've seen how much is up there and how much sealing the attic needs.
What should I fix before insulating my attic?
Fix a leaking roof first. Guidance also says to hold off on sealing and insulating if the attic has active knob and tube wiring, which is old wiring run on porcelain knobs, or vermiculite, or bathroom fans venting into it. The same goes for an unvented kerosene heater or gas fireplace in the house. Insulation over any of those just hides the problem, so I'll point out what I see when I come out.
What do I do if my attic has vermiculite insulation?
Leave it alone, because the EPA says disturbing vermiculite can release asbestos fibers. It's a pebble-like pour-in fill, usually gray-brown or silver-gold, and it's fine to look at as long as you don't touch it. Removal goes to a trained, accredited asbestos abatement contractor. The EPA says that contractor should be separate from whoever assessed the insulation, so ask who did the assessment before you hire anyone.
What is the best way to insulate a vented attic?
For the floor of a vented attic, loose fill or fiberglass batts are good choices, and they're the least expensive types of insulation. Foam costs more and seals air while it insulates. Sealing the gaps and topping up loose fill usually wins, unless your ductwork runs through the attic.
How long does attic insulation take, and do we have to leave the house?
Most loose fill attic jobs don't need you out of the house, because the crew works up top and covers the path to the hatch. Foam is different, and if that's your job I'll tell you up front when the kids and pets can come back in. I'll give you the timing for your attic with the estimate, since it turns mostly on how much sealing the attic needs.
Are there rebates for attic insulation in Iowa?
There can be, since utility energy efficiency programs in Iowa often offer rebates or loans for energy efficient building parts. Check your utility company's website for current offers.
