Is closed-cell foam the right insulation for my basement?

Closed-cell foam insulation is a dense spray foam that we put on basement walls and rim joists, the wood band sitting on top of the foundation, in Davenport houses where you need one layer to stop drafts and keep moisture out of the insulation.

Most people call us about cold floors over the basement, a draft they can feel down by the foundation or a power bill that keeps climbing. The price turns on how much wall we're spraying, how thick it has to go and how much prep comes first, like pulling out old batts with our insulation removal work or getting a wet wall fixed. The schedule mostly turns on sorting out any water first and on when your family can be away while the foam cures. You get your own number at the estimate visit at your house.

How we install closed-cell foam insulation

I only suggest closed-cell foam where it earns its higher price, and that usually means basement walls and rim joists where moisture is a worry. If a wall is wet or something is leaking, I'll tell you, and that gets fixed first, because foam over a wet wall just hides the problem. Then our crew clears and covers the work area, sprays the foam in even passes, trims what needs it and cleans up, so the only thing you notice afterward is that the drafts are gone. Before we book the job, we go over how long you'll be out of the house so you can plan around it.

When a spot doesn't need a moisture barrier, open-cell foam insulation fills the space for less, and in most attics sealing the gaps and topping up the loose fill beats either foam unless your ductwork runs up there. For building owners and managers, the same foam work is part of our commercial insulation service.

Closed-cell foam insulation jobs in Davenport

Davenport requires permits for general building improvements, and its list names additions, remodels, roofing, siding and windows but not closed-cell foam insulation, so the list alone doesn't settle whether your job needs one. The City of Davenport is the place to ask, and the city also tells people to check its City Code, since local amendments may apply. If your job needs a permit, we take care of it with the city and tell you about it up front.

D&K Davenport Insulation Company is based in Davenport and works on both sides of the river. A lot of what we see is older houses with a cold basement and a rim joist you can feel the draft through, so we look at the whole band around the basement, not just the wall you noticed. We see the same basements on jobs in Bettendorf and Rock Island, and in plenty of cities that don't have a page here.

Frequently asked questions

Is closed-cell foam worth the higher price over open-cell foam?

It's worth it where moisture is the worry, and usually not anywhere else. Closed-cell costs more to install because it expands less and takes more foam to fill the same space, and what you get is a rigid layer rated about R-6 per inch, the measure of how well it slows heat, that lets almost no moisture vapor through at its usual thickness. In a dry spot you'd be paying for a moisture barrier you don't need.

What is the best way to insulate basement walls in Davenport?

Put a water-tolerant insulation right against the inside of the foundation walls, since research on basement insulation found that setup the most consistently effective. Fiberglass batts on a basement wall let indoor air move through them, and that can lead to condensation and mold behind the wall. When you compare quotes, ask whether the insulation will sit right against the foundation.

How do I seal air leaks at the rim joists in my basement?

Spray foam over them to a finished thickness of at least 1.5 inches with closed-cell, which is what federal guidance says it takes to count as an air barrier. Open-cell needs at least 5.5 inches to do the same job. Ask any contractor you're comparing what finished thickness they plan to spray.

How long do I have to stay out of the house after spray foam insulation?

Plan on at least 24 hours, because federal safety guidance tells homeowners to leave during the spraying and for at least that long after. The guidance also has installers shut off and seal the heating and cooling openings in the work area, then restart the system only once the foam has fully cured and the area has been aired out and cleaned. Line up a place to stay for the kids and pets too.

Is spray foam insulation safe if someone in my house has asthma?

It may not be the right material for them. Safety guidance says people with skin conditions, respiratory allergies, asthma or a past sensitivity to isocyanates, the chemicals that react to form the foam, should read the product information and, if needed, consider a different insulation. Tell us at the estimate, and ask us to walk you through the safety steps for your job.

Who can install closed-cell foam insulation in Davenport, Iowa?

In Davenport, building work generally has to be done by a licensed and bonded contractor, who takes out the permit for the property owner. Iowa also requires contractors who earn at least $2,000 a year from construction to register with the state Department of Inspections, Appeals, and Licensing. An owner with legal title to a single-family home can remodel it without a contractor license, except for mechanical, electrical or plumbing work.

  • Open-cell foam insulation

A lighter, cheaper foam for walls and rooflines that stay dry, when you want the air sealing without paying for a moisture barrier.

  • Commercial insulation

Foam and other insulation for offices, shops and rental buildings, planned around the people who use them.
