What does it take to insulate a basement in Davenport?

Basement insulation in Davenport covers your foundation walls, usually from the inside where the concrete is easy to reach, so the basement holds its heat and the floors above stop feeling cold. It only works when the walls are dry and the material can handle sitting against concrete.

Most people call us about a cold basement, a cold floor in the room above it or a power bill that climbs every winter. The price moves with how much wall there is, whether water has to be fixed first, what we put against the concrete and how much rim joist needs work, and the schedule mostly turns on that water repair and how much you'll need to clear away from the walls. I come out, look at the walls and write the estimate myself, and we work in Davenport and cities on both sides of the river, in Iowa and Illinois. If the cold is really coming down from above, attic insulation may be the better place to start, and I'll tell you so.

How we do basement insulation

I start by looking hard at the walls, because if they get wet, we talk about stopping the water before anything goes on them. Insulation over a damp wall is money wasted. Then we do the air sealing, closing the gaps and openings through the foundation wall, so the new insulation isn't fighting a draft. We put up a material that can handle sitting against concrete, and we give the rim joist, the band of wood that sits on top of the foundation, extra attention because it's a spot that gets skipped a lot. Once the wall is covered the way you want it finished, my crew cleans up and I walk the basement with you to check the work.

On most basement walls, closed-cell foam insulation, a dense foam that blocks moisture, is what I'd pick. It costs more than batts, and I think it's worth it down there because it seals the air and insulates in one layer right against the concrete. Open-cell foam insulation is softer and costs less, and we use it in walls and rooflines upstairs, but I keep it off basement concrete because it lets moisture through.

Basement insulation in Davenport: permits and what we find

The City of Davenport requires permits for building improvements and for electrical and plumbing work. Its list names remodels and windows but doesn't mention basement insulation, so the list alone doesn't settle whether your job needs one. If it does, we take care of it with the city and tell you up front, and if you'd rather ask yourself, the city's Building Counter at the Public Works Center is the place.

A lot of what we see around Davenport is older houses with block or poured walls, a damp corner or two and old batts behind paneling that have gone musty, so we pull back whatever's there and look before quoting anything new. We find the same kinds of basements on jobs in Bettendorf and across the river in Rock Island, and we handle them the same way.

Why call us for basements

  • The owner writes your estimate

I come out myself, look at your walls and rim joist and write the estimate, then check the finished job with you after my crew does the work. You talk to the same person at the start and at the end.

  • Trained in Davenport attics

I learned this trade on my dad's crew around Davenport before I could drive, and I started this business in 2021 to run jobs the way he taught me. That means the right order and no shortcuts, which matters most in a basement.

  • Straight answers on wet walls

If your wall needs a water repair before it needs insulation, I'll tell you, even if that means we don't get the job yet. I'd rather lose the sale than sell you a fix that hides the problem.

  • Licensed and insured

We're licensed and insured. My crew cleans up after itself, so the only thing you notice when we leave is a warmer basement.

Frequently asked questions

Can fiberglass go right against basement walls?

We don't put it there, because fiberglass or cellulose against a foundation wall can soak up a lot of moisture and stay damp. Closed-cell spray foam handles moisture better than any other insulation on the inside of a foundation wall, and plastic sheeting over damp batts only traps the water in. That's why foam is usually what I recommend against your concrete.

How do I get my basement ready for insulation?

Get any water coming through the walls fixed first, and steer water away from the foundation before anyone insulates. Insulation over a wall that's still taking on water just hides the problem. If you see stains, a white crust or wet spots, point them out when I come over and we'll talk about the repair before anything else.

Can I insulate my own basement in Davenport?

Yes, if you hold title to a single-family home, the city lets you remodel without a contractor license, except for mechanical, electrical or plumbing work, and you take out any permit yourself. Otherwise building work in Davenport generally has to be done by a licensed contractor, who takes out the permit for you. Iowa also requires construction contractors who earn $2,000 or more a year from construction to register with the state, so it's fair to ask anyone you hire about that.

How much does basement insulation cost per square foot?

Across the US, basement insulation usually runs about $4.40 to $6.40 per square foot. That's a national figure, not our price. Where your job lands depends on how much wall there is, whether you go with closed-cell foam or something cheaper, how much rim joist work there is and how the finished wall gets covered, and I'll give you your own number at the estimate.

What is the best way to insulate a basement rim joist?

Use something air can't pass through, because the inside of the rim joist gets cold in winter and insulating the walls below makes it colder. Fiberglass batts stuffed in there let indoor air reach that cold wood, which can lead to condensation and mold. Spray foam there or on the walls has to be covered with ignition-barrier paint or drywall, so we settle how yours gets covered before we start.

Should I test my Davenport basement for radon?

Yes. Iowa's health department says the whole state is at high risk for radon in homes and that everyone should test. It's a separate question from insulation, but it's worth doing.

  • Closed-cell foam insulation

Worth a look when your walls or rim joist need one dense layer that keeps out both air and moisture.

  • Open-cell foam insulation

A good fit for above-ground walls and rooflines where you want a softer foam that fills every gap.
