Is spray foam worth it for my Davenport house?

Spray foam insulation seals air leaks and insulates in one pass, so in a Davenport house it's usually the right call where drafts and heat loss happen in the same place, like the wood band on top of the foundation wall, a crawl space or an attic with ductwork running through it.

Most calls start with a cold room, floors that chill your feet all winter or a heating bill that keeps going up in an older house. Foam costs more than other insulation, so what you pay depends on how many spots get it, how big they are, whether each one needs open or closed cell, how tight the space is to work in and whether old insulation has to come out first. The schedule mostly turns on the weather and on when everyone in the house can be away while the foam cures. I'll come out, look at each spot and write you an estimate for your house.

How we handle a spray foam insulation job

We work in a set order. At the estimate I ask who lives in the house, whether anyone has asthma or other health worries, and where everyone will stay while the foam cures, because that plan has to be settled before anyone sprays. Then I walk each spot and pick open-cell foam, a softer foam that stops air, or closed-cell foam, a dense foam that also slows moisture, based on where it's going, since the rim joist in your basement, a crawl space wall and an attic roofline don't always need the same thing. If the old insulation is wet or full of droppings, it comes out first, and a roof leak or a wet wall gets fixed before we cover it, because foam over a problem just hides it. Our crew masks off what needs protecting, sprays, and cleans up after themselves, so the only thing you notice afterward is that the drafts are gone.

Foam isn't always the answer, and I'll tell you when it isn't. Its edge is sealing air while it insulates, which matters most when your ductwork lives up in the attic. If it doesn't, sealing the gaps around lights, pipes and the hatch and then topping up with blown-in insulation usually gets you further for the money. Plenty of jobs end up as a mix, with foam on the rim joists downstairs and regular attic insulation up top.

What affects spray foam insulation in Davenport houses

Before a foam job, it's worth checking what the city has on file for your property. The city's Building and Land Development page is its one-stop resource for improving property in Davenport, and its interactive map shows any special zoning or other rules that may affect your project. Iowa's residential energy code covers homes of three stories or fewer, but it leaves out remodeling and renovation of one- and two-family houses, so for a foam job in the house you already live in, the city's page is the place to start. If something there touches your job, we'll talk it through with you before we start.

Around here we mostly work in older houses with basements and crawl spaces where cold air sneaks in at the rim joist, and that's usually where foam earns its cost. We're based in Davenport and work on both sides of the river, and we find the same drafty basements on jobs in Bettendorf and Rock Island, plus plenty of cities that don't have their own page here.

Why call us for spray foam

  • The owner writes your estimate

I come out to look at the job and write the estimate myself, and my crew does the work. When they're done, I check the finished job with you, so the person who made the plan is the one who signs off on it.

  • Licensed and insured, easy to check

We're licensed and insured. Before anyone sprays foam in your house, check their training, insurance and references, and look the business up on Iowa's contractor registration list.

  • Learned in Davenport attics

I learned this trade crawling through attics around Davenport on my dad's crew, and I started this business in 2021 to run jobs the way he taught me. That means the right order, no shortcuts and a straight answer, even when the answer isn't more insulation.

Frequently asked questions

How long do we have to stay out of the house after spray foam insulation?

Plan on being out at least 24 hours, during the spraying and after it. That's what staff at the federal Consumer Product Safety Commission advise, because fumes vary with the foam type and the conditions in the house. Think of that re-entry time, when you can come back, as a floor rather than a promise, and line up where everyone, kids and pets included, will stay before the day we spray.

Should I choose open-cell or closed-cell spray foam?

Choose by where the foam goes, not by which one sounds better. Open-cell stops air well but still lets water vapor pass, while closed-cell at normal thickness slows moisture, so in a wood-framed wall closed-cell keeps the wall from drying toward the outside. At the rim joist, open-cell has to go on thicker than closed-cell to seal the air, which is part of what I weigh when I pick for each spot.

What is the best time of year to install spray foam in Davenport?

The best time is when the temperature and humidity suit the foam, because the EPA says both play a big part in how spray foam cures. Ask us and the foam's maker which time of year and what weather suit your job, and we'll set the date with that in mind.

Is spray foam safe if someone in my house has asthma?

It may not be the best choice. The same federal safety staff say people with asthma, respiratory allergies, skin conditions or a past reaction to isocyanates, one of the chemicals in the foam, should read the product information closely, and that another kind of insulation may suit them better. Tell me at the estimate, and if foam isn't right for your family, I'll say so and suggest something else.

How much does spray foam insulation cost in Davenport?

Spray foam usually costs more than blown-in or batt insulation, and your price comes from the spots you foam, their size and which foam each one gets. Closed-cell is denser and usually costs more than open-cell, so using it only where moisture matters keeps the bill down, and foaming just the rim joists while using loose fill elsewhere is often the better value. You'll get your own figure in writing at the estimate.

How do I handle electrical or plumbing work near spray foam later?

Tell whoever's doing the work that the foam is there before they start, because the EPA says plumbers and electricians shouldn't heat or grind spray foam, since that can release toxic emissions. If you already know a repair or remodel is coming, mention it at the estimate so we can plan around it.

  • Attic insulation

If the upstairs runs hot in summer and cold in winter, the attic is usually the first place to look, and one trip up the hatch tells us what's there.

  • Blown-in insulation

Once the gaps are sealed, loose fill blown over the attic floor is a lower-cost way to add depth when foam would be more than the job needs.
